Towhee Song

Jefferson County, CO

Spotted towhees are large and colorful sparrows that populate shrublands across the western U.S. In spring, their raucous singing is unmistakeable, filling grassland and sage steppe with towhee song. This male dove into a large brush in April, and I just waited, knowing that he would soon sing from the tallest branch in hopes of attracting a mate.
